Save Tong Daeng!
Thai Elephant Home is a special place for elephants. Here they live good lives, work only a few hours a day, and do not work when they are pregnant or injured. Thai Elephant Home also offers sanctuary to sick or pregnant elephants.
Begging Elephants
Not all elephants have it so good. Many elephants after they are injured become begging elephants. Begging elephants end up on city streets where the noise, 12 hour days, and long distances on unsuitable roads are hard on the elephant and its mahout. The elephants take pictures with tourists who do not know this life is bad for the elephant.
How You Can Help
Recently, we started taking care of Tong Daeng, a 10 year old male elephant with no tusks, who suffered a broken leg five years ago. He is healed but should not have to work. We give him food, a place to stay, and a mahout to watch over him. But in order for us to keep him here at Thai Elephant Home and give him a good life, we need to pay his owner 500,000 baht (about 15,000 US dollars) quickly before someone else buys him and he becomes a begging elephant.
